Impotence: The Scientific Impotence Excuse:Discounting Belief-Threatening Scientific Abstracts

The scientific impotence discounting hypothesis predicts that people resist belief-disconfirming scientific evidence by concluding that the topic of study is not amenable to scientific investigation. In 2 studies, participants read a series of brief abstracts that either confirmed or disconfirmed their existing beliefs about a stereotype associated with homosexuality. Relative to those reading belief-confirming evidence, participants reading belief-disconfirming evidence indicated more belief that the topic could not be studied scientifically and more belief that a series of other unrelated topics could not be studied scientifically. Thus, being presented with belief-disconfirming scientific evidence may lead to an erosion of belief in the efficacy of scientific methods.
Impotence: Impotence 'a sign of heart problems'

Conclusion
This was a well-conducted study that confirms previous observational studies on erectile dysfunction and heart disease. There are some points to consider when interpreting the results.

Participants in the two trials that originally provided data for this study were randomly assigned to treatment groups (randomised), but those in the substudy were not. They were instead grouped according to their history of impotence, making this an observational study rather than a randomised trial. This means that it is prone to the biases that occur in observational studies, although the researchers have correctly taken these into account in their reporting and analysis.
At the start of the study, there were differences between the two groups in terms of the numbers of men with diabetes...

View the full article

Contemporary Nurse 34(1): 98-109 Abstract The experiences of men in the immediate postoperative period following surgery for primary prostate cancer are well reported in the literature. Recognition of the unresolved morbidity encountered by men in the medium term suggests that a more complete understanding of how men cope in the long term is needed. Health professionals are deserving of a more complete literature for the purpose of providing holistic care for this group of men, providing informed advocacy and better support for men living with the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Emerging literature reveals that men's knowledge of the long term problems associated with prostatectomy was inadequate at the time they consented to treatment; the likely outcomes at all phases of recovery should be...

View the full article

Impotence: Dr Crippen: On the problem with prostate cancer screening

At post-mortem, most elderly men have traces of prostate cancer but have died of other causesThere is a much-publicised screening test for early prostate cancer, but GPs hesitate before ordering the test on demand. A slightly raised PSA (a protein that healthy prostates produce in small amounts) may indicate early prostate cancer, but it will not tell you what to do about it. Surgical removal of the prostate has a mortality rate and may cause unpleasant side-effects, like impotence and incontinence. At post-mortem, most elderly men have traces of prostate cancer but have died of other causes. We would have done them no favours, if we had removed their prostates.I saw Ernest, a 67 year old man, three moths ago. His brother, aged 60, had just been found to have inoperable prostate cancer, so...

View the full article

Impotence: Prostate cancer therapy can increase risk of heart disease and death

(NaturalNews) A new report published in the American Cancer Society journal, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, and in the American Heart Association journal, Circulation, reveals that androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT), a type of prostate cancer treatment, can increase heart risk factors and possibly lead to heart attack or cardiac death.A writing group of experts from the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the American Urological Association, and the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology published their findings that indicate that ADT leads to increased fat mass, increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the "bad" form of cholesterol, and blood sugar abnormalities. The goal of ADT is to reduce male hormonal levels in order to decrease t...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

View the full article

Impotence: Neurovascular bundle resection: Does it improve the margins?

Abstract: Prior to the description of the anatomic nerve sparing radical prostatectomy, most men were rendered impotent following radical perineal or retropubic prostatectomies. The fact that these “erection” nerves were localized outside the prostate suggested the feasibility of totally eradicating localized prostate cancer with preservation of erectile function in selected cases. All of these studies collectively suggest that unilateral excision of neurovascular bundles will compromise potency rates in between 15% to 20% of cases. It seems logical to report the risk of extracapsular extension independently for the two sides of the prostate, especially since independent decisions are made relative to the nerve sparing status of the different sides. Extracapsular extension is a risk fa...

View the full article

The distal bulbospongiosus is uniformly smaller than the proximal bulbospongiosus. The potential need for a perineal or transcorporeal approach to artificial urinary sphincter placement can be anticipated by penile circumference measurements and a combination of clinical factors, such as older patient age, history of radical prostatectomy and impotence.
Combined long-term androgen deprivation (LTAD) and radiation conveys a prostate cancer-specific survival advantage over combined short-term androgen deprivation (STAD) and radiation. The seminal question is whether or not the gains are worth the adverse effects of LTAD with respect to patient preferences.Preferences for LTAD compared with STAD were elicited by direct patient interview using the probability trade-off method. "Time trade-off utilities" (TTOu) for erectile dysfunction and osteoporosis were elicited using the time trade-off method.
Authors: Ghasemi M, Rezania F, Lewin J, Moore KP, Mani AR
D-Serine, an endogenous co-agonist for the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor in mammals, is synthesized from L-serine by serine racemase. Although much attention has been focused on the role of D-serine within the central nervous system, the physiological role of D-serine in peripheral nerves such as corpus cavernosal nerves has not been investigated. The present study was aimed to study the expression, cellular localization and function of serine racemase/D-serine system in isolated rat corpus cavernosum. RT-PCR and western blot analysis showed the expression of serine racemase in rat corpus cavernosum.
Impotence: Prostate Cancer Screening: 50 Percent False Positives

(NaturalNews) As many as 50 percent of all prostate cancer diagnoses may be cases of over-diagnosis, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal.Over-diagnosis refers to the detection of a cancer that, if left untreated, would never have any negative effects on a person's life. This happens with cancers that grow slowly and do not spread to other organs, so that a patient dies of other causes before ever experiencing any symptoms.Because prostate cancers tend to be very slow growing, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recommended against screening men over the age of 74 for prostate cancer. Treatments for the disease can have severe side effects, including impotence and incontinence, and may even increase the risk of early death.Another paper, published in the sa...

View the full article

My undercover investigation has led to a campaign against those who wreck lives by peddling conversion therapyLast year, in Britain, a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist tried to "cure" me of my homosexuality. What they didn't know was that I was working undercover investigating what happens during so-called conversion therapy. The results of my investigation, published last week in the Independent, have sparked a bushfire of anger and outrage. It's hardly surprising. The psychotherapist told me I had been sexually abused by a member of my family (which I hadn't). The psychiatrist tried to induce arousal in me during a "therapy" session. He also claimed to have "resolved" his own sexuality while admitting that he still masturbates over gay pornography. Perhaps more scandalous was the discov...

View the full article

Impotence: Scientists discover how Cordyceps mushrooms fight cancer

(NaturalNews) For thousands of years, the mushroom known as Cordyceps has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat problems ranging from coughs and fatigue to impotence and cancer. And once Western scientists started considering that anecdotal reports of the mushroom's curative powers might be something more than "folk tales", research started accumulating that backs up many ancient claims about Cordyceps' health benefits. For example, scientists from the University of Nottingham in Great Britain say they've documented how Cordiceps can fight cancer -- and the new discovery could increase the effectiveness of mushroom-derived cancer treatments. For the study, published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Dr. Cornelia de Moor of the University of Nottingham and her colleagues ...

View the full article

My boyfriend and I have just come back from a night in London with friends, a couple like us. I've got on so splendidly well with them in the past, but this time everything felt subtly different, and food was mostly to blame, I think.I felt a first twinge of discomfort when, as he set about preparing the lunch, she said to him that she didn't want anything - then, to me, that she'd had ‘quite a big breakfast' so wasn't hungry. In fact, as he laid out the spread of salads and cold meats and chicken curry, she decided either that she was hungry after all, or that she'd be polite and join in, and she took a couple of small helpings of salad. Neither of them had any of the bread and butter, bought specially for us, it seemed; he was for a long time overweight, and lost weight by a low-carb r...

View the full article

Impotence: Radical Embitterment: The Unconscious Psychology of Terrorists

Yesterday, Christmas Day, 2009, a twenty-three-year-old Nigerian with purported Al-Qaeda connections, apparently tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines jet carrying almost three-hundred-passengers-plus-crew as it prepared to land in Detroit, Michigan. Miraculously, as with the infamous "shoe-bomber" Richard Reid in 2001, the allegedly "sophisticated" device he attempted to detonate did not work as planned, and disaster was once again averted.
But authorities, who are officially calling it an act of terrorism, are concerned that this could be part of a concerted effort by other similarly armed individuals intending to bring down passenger planes. In 2006, British police broke up a plot to blow half-a-dozen commercial airliners out of the sky on their way to the U.S., using a chemical explosi...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

View the full article

A team from the University of Kingston, in Surrey, have shown that pomegranate can be used to create an ointment with the power to tackle the drug-resistant infections. In a series of tests conducted over three years, academics found that mixing the fruit's rind with two other natural products – metal salts and vitamin C – greatly enhanced its infection-fighting properties.
Impotence: [Comment] Stunned deaf

Nations that have ratified the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child have agreed to put in place measures “to guarantee the protection of the child from the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography”. So it is fitting that in the year that marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention by the UN General Assembly we publish the winner of the Wakley prize essay, as judged by Lancet editors (masked to the identities of entrants). Awarded for the best essay on a clinical topic of public health importance, Deafness is a stark portrayal of the still-widespread exploitation of the vulnerable child—of the impotence (“I am stunned deaf”) to intervene. The author, James Levine, is a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Roche...

View the full article

Impotence: Expression of Hiwi in human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is significantly associated with poorer prognosis

Background:
HIWI, the human homologue of Piwi family, is present in CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells and germ cells, but not in well-differentiated cell populations, indicating that HIWI may play an impotent role in determining or maintaining stemness of these cells. That HIWI expression has been detected in several type tumours may suggest its association with clinical outcome in cancer patients. Methods: With the methods of real-time PCR, western blotimmunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry, the expression of HIWI in three esophageal squamous cancer cell lines KYSE70, KYSE140 and KYSE450 has been characterized. Then, we investigated HIWI expression in a series of 153 esophageal squamous cell carcinomas using immunohistochemistry and explored its association with clinicopathological fea...

View the full article
